Family Seeks Justice After Woman’s Alleged Hospital Neglect

Share

A family in Manitoba is seeking explanations following the death of a woman from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation who they claim was denied care at a hospital in Manitoba. Naturelle Cook revealed that her sister, Shandi Cook, aged 25, passed away after visiting the Swan Valley Health Centre on October 11. Shandi, who had previously been diagnosed with leukemia, experienced breathing difficulties upon arrival at the hospital, according to a witness who accompanied her.

Despite Shandi’s worsening condition, including vomiting blood while at the facility, she allegedly did not receive the necessary medical attention and was eventually sent home. Subsequently, Shandi’s health deteriorated further, and despite her family’s attempts to seek help, she tragically passed away the following morning.

Naturelle expressed concerns that her sister was racially profiled by the nurses at the Swan Valley Health Centre. She mentioned that a community group for Sapotaweyak Cree Nation members frequently warns against seeking treatment at the Swan Valley Health Centre due to alleged discrimination, prompting individuals to travel long distances to other hospitals for care.

The family has reached out to Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara, an Indigenous advocate, and a lawyer, and is considering legal action. They are demanding an apology and a detailed account of the events leading to Shandi’s denial of care. The family has been documenting their inquiries and seeking justice for Shandi’s untimely death.

Prairie Mountain Health, the regional health authority, stated that they are investigating the family’s claims but cited privacy regulations for not disclosing patient-related information. Asagwara acknowledged the incident and assured a thorough review of the situation to provide the family with clear answers.

Naturelle fondly remembers Shandi as a cheerful person who always prioritized others’ well-being. Shandi’s determination during her cancer treatment and her pride in being a mother are highlighted by her family. Naturelle also revealed the family’s challenging past, including their mother’s tragic murder, emphasizing their ongoing quest for justice.

In light of these events, Naturelle hopes for improvements in the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies and urges people not to overlook the seriousness of denying medical assistance, as it could have devastating consequences for their loved ones.
