The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation is initiating a series of scientific and economic research projects concerning Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of an extensive water conservation plan that has generated discussions regarding recreational boating in the region. Chief (Nasuʔkin) Donald Sam emphasized the significance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people and the necessity of relying on credible data for decision-making.

Allocating $200,000 towards mapping the East Kootenay lakes, the First Nation will assess shoreline conditions, sediment movement, and the economic impact of recreational activities. While these stewardship deliberations have raised concerns among some residents regarding potential restrictions affecting the local economy, Chief Sam clarified that the objective is not to hinder economic progress but to identify compatible recreational activities that safeguard the lakes’ long-term well-being.

Amid increasing scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are known to disturb sediment, harm shorelines, and contribute to environmental deterioration in smaller lakes, Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake, being relatively shallow, are particularly susceptible to wake disruption and shoreline erosion. Stakeholders such as Lake Windemere Ambassadors advocate for responsible boating practices, including speed limitations and adherence to regulations.

Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere expressed support for a science-based approach, stressing the importance of considering both economic and environmental aspects when making decisions. He highlighted the need to gather and analyze data to ensure informed decision-making that balances economic benefits with environmental protection. Chief Sam reiterated that the stewardship planning process is in its early stages and emphasized the importance of community engagement and information sharing before any potential restrictions are implemented.

The overarching goal of the research endeavors is to develop a comprehensive lake stewardship strategy that harmonizes environmental conservation with economic prosperity, aiming for a balanced approach that ensures sustainable utilization of the lakes for the future.
