A fish processing facility in St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, was engulfed in flames amidst severe weather conditions including hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall. Mayor Steve Ryan of St. Mary’s reported the fire, stating that he was the first responder at the plant owned by St. Mary’s Bay Fisheries, where a significant portion of the building has already been destroyed.
Despite the presence of three fire crews on the scene, they were hindered by the strong winds associated with a weather bomb sweeping through the region. Meteorologist Rodney Barney noted wind gusts reaching up to 172 km/h at Cape St. Mary’s. Sherry Gambin-Walsh, the Liberal MHA for Placentia-St. Mary’s, expressed deep sorrow over the devastating impact on the community, emphasizing the profound loss of employment and the crucial role the plant played in the area’s economy.
The incident has left residents in shock as they witnessed the destruction of a vital source of livelihood. The community is reeling from the loss, with many struggling to come to terms with the magnitude of the disaster.
