A former employee of Beast Industries has filed a lawsuit against MrBeast’s media production company, alleging wrongful termination from her role as a social media manager after returning from maternity leave. Lorrayne Mavromatis, the plaintiff, claims to have experienced sexual harassment and gender bias during her years at the company. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in North Carolina, accuses MrBeastYouTube and GameChanger 24/7 of violating federal laws protecting employees’ rights to unpaid, job-protected leave for reasons such as childbirth. In addition, Mavromatis lodged a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, citing discrimination based on sex, pregnancy, and retaliation.
Mavromatis asserted that she faced excessive work demands even after giving birth and recounted instances of being expected to work immediately post-delivery. Less than three weeks after resuming full-time work, she was terminated from her position. The company spokesperson dismissed the lawsuit as a baseless attempt for attention, stating that Mavromatis’s role was eliminated during a team reorganization led by the new head of ecommerce.
Allegations within Mavromatis’s lawsuit shed light on the internal culture of Beast Industries, the media empire associated with YouTube star MrBeast. The lawsuit paints a picture of a toxic and misogynistic work environment that the company has purportedly been trying to rectify as it expands into new ventures like television and financial services. This legal action comes amidst prior controversies surrounding the company’s internal culture, including issues related to workplace harassment and misconduct identified in a previous investigation.
MrBeast, the prominent YouTube personality behind Beast Industries, has aimed to address concerns regarding the company’s work environment. The company has undergone changes following past controversies and strives to foster a safe and productive atmosphere for its employees. As the company grows and diversifies its offerings beyond its founder’s persona, it continues to attract new talent and expand its operations.
The lawsuit highlights the intense work culture alleged by Mavromatis, citing a company guide that emphasized extreme dedication to work. Mavromatis mentioned joining a work meeting from her hospital bed during labor out of fear of losing her job if she declined. The legal action also details Mavromatis’s career progression within the company and her interactions with company executives that led to her eventual demotion.
The lawsuit’s claims have drawn attention to broader issues of workplace abuse and the importance of accountability in addressing such matters. Organizations like the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund are supporting Mavromatis’s case, underscoring the need to combat longstanding cultures of harassment and silence in workplaces.
