Share

Caitlyn Moony, an individual looking to establish roots in Vancouver, reflects on her journey of relocating to the city. Originally from Johannesburg, she made the move in 2018 with high hopes of a new beginning. Despite the allure of Vancouver’s stunning landscapes and vibrant atmosphere, her initial excitement gradually waned as reality set in.

Facing challenges such as a lack of professional connections and the elusive “Canadian experience” sought by employers, Moony found herself in a demanding admin role at a startup. The long hours, meager pay, and cramped living conditions in a basement apartment took a toll on her well-being. She became disillusioned with the city, criticizing its transportation system, slower pace of life, and perpetual rainy weather.

Loneliness also plagued Moony, as she struggled to find a sense of community in Vancouver. Her quest for connection led her to confront the city’s seemingly sparse social scene, further exacerbating her feelings of isolation. The onset of the pandemic heightened these emotions, prompting her to eventually leave for London, seeking solace in its bustling urban environment.

However, her time in London made her realize a shift within herself. Vancouver’s tranquil essence had left an indelible mark, fostering a sense of introspection and self-discovery. Despite the city’s imperfections, Moony acknowledges a newfound appreciation for its unique character and the personal growth it facilitated. Returning to Vancouver with a fresh perspective, she hopes for a renewed relationship with the city, embracing its quirks and seeking a sense of belonging.

Moony’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of place, highlighting the complexities of forging connections and finding oneself in a new environment.
