For eight consecutive matches, the Canadian women’s hockey team faced defeat against the Americans.
This was the scenario leading up to the 2002 Olympic gold medal showdown between the two teams.
Prior to this, the Canadian team had never clinched Olympic gold in women’s hockey. Despite being the favored team in the inaugural tournament in 1998, they succumbed to the Americans.
Fast forward four years to Salt Lake City, with the weight of those eight losses, the Canadians were considered underdogs.
However, in the most crucial 60 minutes, history was made. When the final buzzer echoed, it was the Canadians who emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over the Americans, claiming the country’s first women’s hockey Olympic gold medal.
This triumph marked a pivotal moment for women’s hockey in Canada, igniting aspirations for numerous women who would later represent the nation, including a young talent from Beauceville, Que.
That young talent, Marie-Philip Poulin, would go on to etch her name in Olympic history. Poulin holds the record for the most golden goals scored at the Olympics and will be participating in her fifth Olympics in Milan, Italy, this February.

Twenty-four years after the historic game in Salt Lake City, the Canadians find themselves potentially in the underdog position once again. They enter the Olympics following six consecutive losses to the Americans, dating back to the last year’s world championship.
In a recent four-game Rivalry Series against the United States, Canada faced a tough challenge, being outscored 24-7.
However, to the 23 players named in the roster on Friday, the past results against the Americans do not define their confidence for the upcoming 2026 Olympics.
“Some consider us the underdogs,” expressed assistant captain Blayre Turnbull to CBC Sports’ Nathan Chizen. “While we may have had tough losses in recent games, our belief in ourselves and our team remains unshaken.”
