Heiltsuk Nation Celebrates Unique Home Birth

Share

Members of the Heiltsuk Nation in Bella Bella, British Columbia, are celebrating the joyous arrival of a baby born on his own native land. The unique aspect of this birth was that the delivering doctor was also a member of the Heiltsuk community.

Given that the local hospital in Bella Bella is not equipped for deliveries, expecting parents typically travel to more advanced medical facilities as their due dates approach. However, Nicole Johnson unexpectedly went into labor at 34 weeks on a day when bad weather prevented air ambulances from landing and all ferries were fully booked.

Dr. Don Wilson, an obstetrician-gynecologist from the Heiltsuk Nation, received a call for assistance with an obstetrical emergency in Bella Bella, his hometown, while he was on duty at Comox Valley Hospital. Wilson quickly mobilized and brought along his anesthesiologist partner to ensure they were prepared for any scenario.

Due to the lack of an operating room at ƛ̓uxválásu̓ilas Heiltsuk Hospital, the medical team had to perform a C-section in the trauma bay. Despite the makeshift setup, the procedure went smoothly, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby at 1:35 a.m.

Nicole Johnson and her baby, Anthony Bennett Johnson, are reported to be in good health post-delivery. Max Johnson, Nicole’s uncle, expressed how this home birth has brought immense joy to the family, especially with a fellow Heiltsuk member overseeing the delivery.

This event has been described as a healing moment for the community, with many emphasizing the significance of a Heiltsuk baby being born on their ancestral land. Dr. Wilson highlighted the emotional connection Indigenous people have to their territories and stressed the importance of supporting rural health-care providers.

In the aftermath of Anthony’s birth, the community has been filled with smiles and happiness, marking this occasion as a unifying and uplifting experience for the Heiltsuk Nation.
