The Israeli military confirmed on Tuesday that the remains of a hostage from Gaza have been transferred to Israel, marking another step forward in the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. Prior to this, Hamas had already returned the remains of 20 hostages to Israel since the ceasefire commenced on October 10. Should the latest set of remains be verified through forensic examination, there would still be seven bodies remaining in Gaza.
The ceasefire initiative aims to de-escalate the most fatal and devastating conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group. Earlier on Tuesday, Hamas’s military branch announced the recovery of an Israeli soldier’s body in Gaza with the intention of handing it over. However, Israel did not confirm whether the remains belonged to a soldier.
In recent days, militants in Gaza have been gradually releasing one to three bodies periodically. Israel has been urging for the swift return of the remains, sometimes disputing the identities of the bodies received. Hamas has cited challenges due to extensive destruction in the region.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel has been reciprocating by releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians for each hostage returned. As of now, 270 Palestinian bodies have been repatriated during this ceasefire period, with less than half of them positively identified. The identification process is hindered by the lack of DNA testing kits in Gaza, prompting the Health Ministry to share images of the remains online in hopes of aiding family recognition.
The conflict was instigated by a Hamas-led incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties and 251 individuals being taken as hostages according to Israeli records. In response, Israel launched a widespread military campaign that led to the deaths of over 68,800 Palestinians in Gaza, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Despite allegations of genocide in Gaza, Israel has refuted such claims, challenging the death toll provided by the Health Ministry without offering an alternative count.
