Hulu has canceled the planned reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” according to an announcement made by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the star of the original TV series, on Saturday. Gellar revealed on Instagram that Hulu had decided not to proceed with the project.
The actress had filmed a pilot for the reboot titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” starring alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was cast as the new vampire slayer. The original show, which followed a group of young individuals battling vampires and supernatural entities in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, was known for its innovative approach to television.
Cultural critics, reflecting on the show’s impact on its 20th anniversary in 2017, highlighted how “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” revolutionized television production by incorporating intricate storylines, in-depth character development, and addressing contemporary social issues and tensions.
Expressing gratitude in her post, Gellar thanked Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director enlisted to revive the series. She expressed her love for the character of Buffy and its significance to both herself and fans. Despite the cancellation, Gellar assured fans that her connection to Buffy remains strong and lightheartedly promised to be available in case of an actual apocalypse.
Hulu has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the cancellation of the reboot.
