“Improved Cell Service on the Horizon for Cornwall Residents”

Share

Residents in Cornwall may soon bid farewell to spotty cell service as Bell proposes a new cell “pole” in the town just west of Charlottetown. The unconventional tower, standing at around 30 meters tall with a sleek design, is set to be positioned behind the new RCMP barracks on the grounds of St. Francis of Assisi Church near Main Street.

Councilor Corey Frizzell highlighted the ongoing concerns expressed by residents regarding the inadequate cell service, with some individuals resorting to making and receiving calls from their driveways due to poor reception. Donald Avery echoed these sentiments, emphasizing his frustration with dropped calls each time he visits Cornwall.

Frizzell noted the persistent efforts of Cornwall’s council in advocating for improved cell service, emphasizing the urgency following the disruptions caused by post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022, particularly affecting the elderly reliant on cellphones for communication.

The church hosting the tower, St. Francis of Assisi, is set to receive compensation from Bell for the installation, with Reverend Peter Wojakiewicz expressing the congregation’s willingness to contribute to enhancing community cell service. Bell emphasized the selection of the site to enhance network performance near Lowther Park, catering to the increasing demand for connectivity.

Construction of the tower is anticipated to commence following public consultations this autumn, with residents invited to raise inquiries to Bell until October 10.
