“Irish Rapper Escapes Terrorism Charge Over Flag Display”

Share

A member of the Irish rap group Kneecap faced a late terrorism charge for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag, resulting in the court dismissing the case due to exceeding the legal time limit. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known by his stage name Mo Chara, was accused of waving the banned militant group’s flag during a London concert in November 2024. The 27-year-old was charged under the Terrorism Act in May for exhibiting an article in a manner that suggested support for a proscribed organization.

Following a ruling at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, it was determined that Ó hAnnaidh was charged after the statutory six-month limit for such offenses, rendering the charge unlawful and beyond the court’s jurisdiction. This decision was met with applause from the gallery.

Vince Gasparro, Canada’s parliamentary secretary, referenced this case when announcing the Canadian government’s decision to ban Kneecap from entering the country. Gasparro cited the group’s endorsement of terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas, actions contrary to Canadian values and laws, as reasons for the ban.

Kneecap denied receiving official communication regarding the ban but acknowledged ticket providers canceling their Toronto and Vancouver shows, promising full refunds to ticket holders. The band members, including Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, expressed their support for Ó hAnnaidh outside Woolwich Crown Court after the ruling.

The controversial hip-hop group has faced criticism for their pro-Palestinian messages, particularly at events like Coachella, where they highlighted Israeli-Palestinian conflicts. Kneecap’s U.S. tour dates were recently canceled, and past incidents of provocative statements, including remarks about political figures, have stirred further debate.

Despite past controversies, Kneecap maintains a strong stance on social and political issues, emphasizing their freedom of expression and the importance of addressing contentious topics through their music.
