Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza Aid Flotilla in Med

Israeli forces intercepted a fleet of nine boats attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza in the Mediterranean Sea early on Wednesday. The flotilla, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and Thousand Madleens to Gaza, had 145 activists on board, including six Canadians. The activists were detained by the Israeli military but were reported to be in good health. They are set to be processed in Israel before deportation.

Global Affairs Canada confirmed the detention of the six Canadians and stated that they are in contact with Israeli authorities to ensure their safety and quick release. This interception follows a previous incident where over 450 activists, including European lawmakers and Greta Thunberg, were intercepted on more than 40 boats last week while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The organizers of the latest flotilla condemned the detentions as “arbitrary and unlawful.” The group included doctors, European parliament members, and national lawmakers from various countries. The flotilla was carrying food and medical aid intended for Gaza hospitals.

Turkey strongly criticized Israel’s actions, calling it an “act of piracy” and a violation of international law. The intercepts have sparked condemnation and protests worldwide. Meanwhile, negotiations between Israel and Hamas have resumed in Egypt, aiming to address the ongoing conflict in the region.

The flotillas’ attempts to reach Gaza come amid increased scrutiny of Israel’s operations in the area, particularly following the devastating impact of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007, citing security concerns, while critics argue it amounts to collective punishment.

Despite the challenges, flotilla activists remain determined to break the blockade and establish a humanitarian corridor by sea to provide aid to Gaza, where access to essential supplies remains limited.
