Canadian footballer Jonathan David has been awarded the title of CONCACAF men’s player of the year for the 2024-25 season. The 25-year-old forward from Juventus clinched the honor for his outstanding performances both at the club and international levels, making him the second Canadian male player to achieve this recognition, following in the footsteps of two-time winner Alphonso Davies.

David, a two-time recipient of the Canada Soccer player of the year award in 2019 and 2024, was previously nominated for the CONCACAF accolade in 2021, 2022, and 2023-24. On the women’s side, Melchie Dumornay from Haiti, who plays for OL Lyonnes in France, secured the CONCACAF women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year.

The selection for these awards, covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025, was determined through a voting process involving players and coaches from CONCACAF member associations, as well as media representatives and fans. Jonathan David holds the record for the most goals scored by a Canadian male player, with 37 goals in 67 appearances.

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice-president and hails from Canada, extended his congratulations to Jonathan and Melchie for their exceptional achievements during the past season, commending their representation of their respective nations and the region in various significant competitions.

In his club endeavors, David showcased his prowess by netting seven goals in the Champions League for Lille in France, setting a record as the highest goal scorer from CONCACAF in a single edition of the tournament in the current century. He also became Lille’s leading scorer in European competitions. Transitioning to Juventus in July, David continued his goal-scoring spree with 16 goals in Ligue 1, ranking fourth in the French league.

Despite facing challenges in finding the net for Juventus, David managed one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the renowned Italian club. Other notable male nominees for the CONCACAF player of the year award included Edson Alvarez from Mexico, Raul Jimenez from Mexico, Angel Sepulveda from Mexico, Malik Tillman from the US, and Manfred Ugalde from Costa Rica.

On the women’s side, Dumornay joins American Alex Morgan as the only players to have won the CONCACAF award multiple times. Dumornay was recognized for her achievements, including being named the UEFA Women’s Champions League young player of the season for the second consecutive year and earning a spot in the competition’s Best XI for her remarkable performance, which included scoring six goals, two of which came in the semifinals against Arsenal.

Additionally, Dumornay played a pivotal role in guiding her French club to the league title, finishing as the second-highest goal scorer in the league with 15 goals. The fans voted Jimenez’s free-kick goal against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals as the goal of the year. The Fulham striker’s stellar performance included scoring both goals in Mexico’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Canada and adding two more in the 2-1 win against Panama in the final.

Among the other nominees for the goal of the year were Mexico’s Charlyn Corral, Jacqueline Ovalle, American players Emily Fox and Lindsey Heaps, and Jamaica’s Khadija (Bunny) Shaw. Fans participated in the voting process, selecting from a pool of 12 nominated goals, which included strikes by renowned players like Christine Sinclair and Sebastian Berhalter. Sinclair was in the running for her goal against Club America Femenil, while Berhalter was nominated for his goal against Pumas UNAM in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
