Renowned children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently shared insights in an interview about her iconic book series, including “The Gruffalo” and the latest addition, “Gruffalo Granny.” Initially, Donaldson had doubts about the success of “The Gruffalo” due to its unconventional storyline and rhyming style, which defied trends at the time.

“Gruffalo Granny” continues the tale of the Gruffalo family preparing to welcome their voracious relative, showcasing the mouse’s clever antics once again. Donaldson described the writing process for this new book as reminiscent of her early days, focusing solely on crafting a compelling narrative without external influences.

The promotion of “Gruffalo Granny” reached unprecedented levels, with an early illustration projection at the British Library leading to remarkable sales figures. Within days of its release, the book became the top-selling title in the UK for 2026 across all genres and age groups, setting a record for the fastest-selling picture book in the country.

Alison Ruane, Macmillan Children’s Books managing director, praised the enduring appeal of Donaldson and Scheffler’s creations, noting how multiple generations are enjoying the Gruffalo stories together. Despite Donaldson indicating that she may not continue the Gruffalo series, her forthcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” promises to captivate young readers with an intriguing oceanic adventure inspired by real-life events.

The success of “Gruffalo Granny” underscores the timeless charm of Donaldson’s storytelling, ensuring her legacy in the world of children’s literature.
