Austrian skier Julia Scheib is the standout competitor in the giant slalom event at the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, defending overall World Cup champion Federica Brignone is making a return after being sidelined for nine months due to injury. American skier Mikaela Shiffrin is steadily improving her performance in giant slalom races.
During a recent competition at the Kronplatz resort, Scheib clinched her fourth giant slalom victory of the season by finishing in two minutes and 19.85 seconds, outpacing Camille Rast by 0.37 seconds and defending Olympic champion Sara Hector by 0.46 seconds. Shiffrin secured the fourth position with a time of 2:20.71, while Brignone finished sixth, 1.23 seconds behind Scheib.
Brignone expressed her satisfaction with her performance, highlighting the challenges she faced during her recovery from a serious injury. Val Grenier from St-Isidore, Ont., achieved the top Canadian placement in ninth position, with Britt Richardson from Canmore, Alta., finishing 11th.
Scheib, who had never won a World Cup race before this season, now leads the giant slalom discipline standings with a significant lead of 139 points over Rast. On the other hand, Shiffrin, a dominant force in alpine skiing with 107 World Cup wins, has not reached the podium in giant slalom for two years.
In another development, Brignone made her comeback to competitive skiing after a lengthy recovery from a leg injury sustained in April. Although Brignone won’t be participating in the upcoming technical races, she is focusing on building her confidence for future competitions.
The skiers are gearing up for the Winter Olympics, with Brignone aiming to represent Italy at the prestigious event in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Sofia Goggia, another Italian contender, faced a setback during the recent race, failing to finish her first run.
