“Marineland Faces Crisis: Beluga Whales at Risk”

Share

Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario is facing challenges as it struggles to provide food and care for its 30 beluga whales and other animals due to financial constraints. Mayor Jim Diodati revealed that the park is currently using borrowed funds to purchase food for the marine mammals and other creatures, but resources are dwindling rapidly. The theme park, established in 1961, remained closed throughout the 2024 season and has been seeking to sell off its assets, including rides, to alleviate its financial burdens.

In a recent development, Marineland issued a warning regarding the potential euthanization of the remaining beluga whales after a request to export them to China was denied by the Canadian government. Despite efforts to find alternative facilities or sanctuaries within Canada, no suitable options have been identified. The park emphasized that the belugas lack the necessary skills to survive in the wild, and a global search determined that Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China offers the best long-term environment for the animals.

Premier Doug Ford has urged reconsideration of the export permit denial, highlighting the significant monthly cost of caring for the belugas. Diodati mentioned receiving support and suggestions from animal welfare experts worldwide to assist in saving the animals, particularly the belugas, some of which may struggle during any relocation attempts.

Collaboration between Marineland, provincial, and federal authorities is deemed necessary to reach a resolution for the animals’ future. The mayor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the animals. Once the animals are relocated from the park’s premises, Marineland plans to sell the property, with hopes of transforming it into a non-animal-focused attraction in the future.
