“Mark Carney Calls for Realism in Global Order”

Share

Since 2017, Canadian leaders have increasingly used the term “rules-based international order.”

While not poetic, the phrase symbolized the network of global institutions created post-World War II, supported by American influence to maintain a level of peace and stability for many nations compared to the war’s devastation.

From 1995 to 2016, the expression was absent in the House of Commons discussions. However, it gained traction after Trump’s election, highlighting the importance of this order.

During a G7 summit in 2018, there was a debate on acknowledging the rules-based international order in the final statement, reflecting concerns over its relevance under Trump’s leadership.

Mark Carney’s recent speech in Davos urged middle powers to acknowledge the evolving global dynamics beyond the traditional order, emphasizing the need for a reality check.

He urged a shift from idealistic views of the rules-based system to recognizing the growing power rivalry and economic coercion among nations.
