“Met Gala Faces Backlash Over ‘Fashion is Art’ Theme”

The upcoming annual fashion show and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York is facing backlash and calls for a boycott this year. Despite the criticism, the event scheduled for May 4, known for its glamour and generosity, will proceed with the theme “Costume Art,” aiming to showcase fashion as an integral part of art history.

Curator Andrew Bolton expressed that this year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” intends to shift the perspective on the relationship between fashion and art. The event, which raised over $31 million US last year, will be held in the newly established 1,115-square-meter Condé M. Nast Galleries, replacing the previous retail space.

A remarkable feature of this year’s exhibition is the inclusion of mannequins representing diverse body types often overlooked in art history, such as large and disabled bodies. Noteworthy personalities like Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé will serve as co-chairs, enhancing the event’s star power, alongside a host committee led by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz.

However, the involvement of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs, providing the main funding for the gala, has sparked controversy. Activists have criticized the partnership, highlighting Amazon’s alleged involvement in contentious issues such as worker exploitation and immigration policies.

With individual tickets priced at $100,000 US and a table for 10 starting at $350,000 US, the Met Gala continues to draw criticism for its extravagance and exclusivity, particularly in a time of growing wealth inequality. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision not to attend this year reflects concerns about the event’s alignment with issues of affordability and social justice.

The absence of Mayor Mamdani and the potential retirement of influential figures like Anna Wintour, who transformed the Met Gala into a global phenomenon, raise questions about the event’s future. Despite challenges and evolving societal dynamics, the Costume Institute has been preparing for sustainability by creating a financial reserve from Met Gala proceeds to ensure its continuity.

As preparations for the 2026 Met Gala continue, the event remains a significant cultural and philanthropic affair, adapting to changing times while upholding its tradition of celebrating art and fashion.
