Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley has been named the new head coach of the New York Red Bulls, describing it as an “incredible opportunity.” Bradley takes over from Sandro Schwarz, who was relieved of his duties on October 27 after a two-season tenure.
The Red Bulls missed the playoffs this season, marking the end of a streak of 15 consecutive postseason appearances. They finished 10th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-15-7. In 2024, the team secured a seventh-place finish and reached the MLS Cup final, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy.
At 38 years old, Bradley has swiftly transitioned into coaching following his retirement as a player in 2023 after a decade with Toronto FC. After serving as an assistant coach at Norway’s Stabaek in 2024 under his father Bob Bradley, he took on the role of coach for the Red Bulls reserve team in June.
Under Bradley’s guidance, the Red Bulls II clinched the MLS Next Pro Cup title in November after a penalty shootout victory over the Colorado Rapids 2. Subsequently, he was appointed as the head coach of the Red Bulls first team on December 15, joining forces with New York sporting director Julian de Guzman, a former TFC player and Canada captain.
Bradley expressed his excitement at a press conference held at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., stating that the opportunity came sooner than expected. He emphasized his readiness to take on the new role and his determination to succeed.
Having earned 151 caps for the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2019, Bradley, a native of New Jersey, has strong connections to the Red Bulls. Initially drafted by the franchise when it was known as the MetroStars in 2004, Bradley played in various countries before joining Toronto FC in 2014, where he achieved significant success, including winning the MLS Cup in 2017.
Bradley’s arrival has infused a sense of determination within the Red Bulls organization, with de Guzman highlighting his relentless work ethic and desire to win. Both Bradley and de Guzman are focused on not only returning the team to the playoffs but also playing an attractive and dynamic style of football.
The Red Bulls have already begun reshaping the squad, making several player changes to align with Bradley’s vision of a younger, faster, and more athletic team.
