Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease awareness, Michael J. Fox, expressed a mix of “pride” and “humility” as he was honored with a promotion in the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall. The Governor General of Canada, Louise Arbour, officially bestowed upon Fox the prestigious companion level within the Order of Canada, citing his impactful global advocacy and candid discussions about Parkinson’s disease.

Reflecting on the ceremony, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada, emphasizing his love for the country, its values, and its progress over time. He highlighted his upbringing in Canada, his appreciation for Canadian music, and the influence of Canadian culture on his identity.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder characterized by symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slowness, often accompanied by depression and memory issues. Fox, who disclosed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, has been actively involved in raising funds for research into the disease and has openly shared his personal experiences to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals dealing with Parkinson’s symptoms.

Acknowledging Canada’s advancements in Parkinson’s research, Fox noted the country’s role in pioneering treatments like deep brain stimulation. He was among 51 individuals recognized within the Order of Canada, with Arbour commending each honoree for their outstanding contributions and commitment to making a positive impact on society.

The ceremony also honored other notable figures, including academics and artists, such as mechanical engineering professor Yusuf Altintas, pediatric neuro-oncology expert Nada Jabado, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Susanne Craig, Colin Roswell Clarke for his work with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra program, Marcelle Dubois for her contributions to Quebec playwriting, and submersible expert Patrick Joseph Lahey.

Arbour praised Fox as a shining example of using talent and influence to benefit others, emphasizing the importance of courage, imagination, and determination in driving sustainable progress. The reference to Fox’s iconic roles in the “Back to the Future” movies added a touch of nostalgia to the event.
