“Microsoft Introduces Xbox ROG Ally & Ally X Handhelds”

Microsoft has unveiled two new portable gaming devices, the Xbox ROG Ally and the Xbox ROG Ally X, following Nintendo’s release of the Switch 2. These devices, created in collaboration with PC manufacturer Asus, are more akin to PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, offering enhanced gaming options but also increased complexity.

While these gadgets boast impressive computing capabilities, they arrive at a challenging time for Xbox fans as subscription costs rise and anticipated games get canceled due to recent company-wide layoffs at Microsoft.

The Xbox ROG Ally, priced at $799, is $100 more expensive than the Switch 2, while the higher-end Xbox ROG Ally X comes at $1,299, offering a more robust processor, increased memory, and double the storage capacity. Designed under the “Republic of Gamers” line by Asus, these devices cater to gamers seeking a premium experience.

Unlike the traditional Xbox consoles, the Xbox ROG Ally operates as a miniature PC running Windows 11, optimized for the Xbox PC storefront. While it allows access to various PC games and digital stores such as Epic Games and Steam, exclusive Xbox titles can only be played via Microsoft’s cloud streaming service.

The Xbox ROG Ally features a vibrant display and powerful speakers, resembling a regular Xbox controller for a familiar gaming experience. Despite its bulkier design compared to the Switch 2, it offers comfortable gameplay sessions due to its lightweight construction.

Microsoft promises seamless gaming experiences for casual players and enthusiasts on the go with these devices. Games like Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite run smoothly, although performance on newer, more demanding titles may vary. The Xbox ROG Ally X, in particular, delivers stable frame rates for recent games like Avowed.

Targeting a niche market of dedicated gamers, these devices cater to consumers seeking high-end gaming experiences. With its premium design and performance, the Xbox ROG Ally stands out among handheld gaming devices this holiday season.
