Canadian track running veteran, Moh Ahmed, secured his first grass Canadian senior title at the cross-country nationals held at Fanshawe Golf Course in London, Ont. Ahmed, a seven-time Canadian senior track running champion, dominated the open men’s 10-kilometre race, finishing in 29 minutes and 30.4 seconds. Despite challenging snowy conditions on the course, Ahmed seized control about two kilometers from the finish line.

Reflecting on the race, Ahmed highlighted the unpredictable nature of cross-country events due to varying elements, contrasting it with track competitions. The top performers, including Ahmed, earned eligibility for the upcoming World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. Notably, Andy Wacker, the early race leader, finished seventh but was ineligible for selection as he is American.

Athletics Canada revealed its 28-member team for the upcoming championships, with Ahmed and five others chosen for the senior men’s squad. Following a series of injuries, including a calf strain that forced an early exit in a previous competition, Ahmed expressed determination to finish the race and clinch the title, showcasing his resilience and competitive spirit.

In the women’s competition, Ceili McCabe emerged victorious in the open women’s 10 km race, marking her second national title in three years. Her impressive time of 32:57 secured her the top spot ahead of Chloe Thomas and Florence Caron. The cross-country worlds, set to take place in Tallahassee, will feature a diverse pool of athletes from over 60 countries, with various challenging terrains and obstacles designed to test the competitors’ skills.

As preparations intensify for the upcoming championships, Canadian athletes across different categories gear up to showcase their talents on the global stage. The Canadian team, led by standout performers like Moh Ahmed and Ceili McCabe, aims to make a strong impact at the prestigious event, building on their recent successes in national competitions.
