In a recent development, the union representing maintenance workers at the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced the suspension of their strike starting at 6 a.m. on November 12. This decision comes amidst a challenging month for Montreal commuters, who are facing disruptions in public transit due to ongoing strikes.
The maintenance workers’ strike, scheduled to last until November 28, has led to a reduction in bus and Metro services, operating only during rush hours every day of the week. Additionally, the union representing bus drivers, train operators, and station agents is planning a strike on November 15 and 16, which could potentially halt the entire public transit system, similar to the 24-hour shutdown on November 1.
Negotiations between the STM and the union have stalled over the issue of maintaining essential services during strike days. Quebec’s labour tribunal is currently addressing this dispute. Meanwhile, the province’s labour minister is expediting the implementation of a law that would enable the government to refer the negotiating parties to arbitration.
As the strikes continue, bus and Metro schedules have been adjusted to limited hours, with adapted transit services operating as usual. The updated schedules for November are as follows:
Bus:
– 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
– 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
– 11:15 p.m. to 1:15 a.m.
Metro:
– 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
– 2:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
– 11 p.m. until usual closing time.
The union representing administrative workers at STM has also announced a strike on November 19, citing concerns about job security, subcontracting, and wages. The ongoing negotiations aim to address issues such as better schedules and the elimination of unpaid work.
Despite the challenges, alternative transportation options such as Bixis, car-sharing apps, and taxis are available for commuters. Bixi Montréal has extended its services and set up additional drop-off stations, while car-sharing companies like Communauto are working to maximize vehicle availability during the strike period.
