A container vessel, the MSC Baltic III, stranded on Newfoundland’s western shores, suffered damage from strong winds and storm surges in recent days, as confirmed by the Canadian Coast Guard. The agency’s latest update highlighted a significant deterioration on the port side of the ship, along with notable shifts in the bow and stern sections.
The MSC Baltic III ran aground at Cedar Cove near Lark Harbour in February, initiating ongoing cleanup and salvage operations. Despite efforts, the vessel is not anticipated to be recovered until at least next summer due to remaining oil in its tanks, as stated by Bruce English, a senior response officer with the Canadian Coast Guard’s Marine Environmental and Hazards Section.
Reports from the salvage team on Friday indicated equipment damage onboard the Baltic III, with debris observed in the water and along the shoreline. Assessments were being conducted on Saturday to evaluate the extent of the inflicted damages.
