Interim NDP Leader Don Davies expressed his anticipation for acknowledgment from Prime Minister Mark Carney following the recent federal budget vote where Carney narrowly passed his budget with the help of four MPs, including two abstentions from the NDP. The final vote resulted in 170 MPs in favor, including Liberals and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, and 168 against. Alongside NDP MPs Lori Idlout and Gord Johns, Conservative MPs Shannon Stubbs and Matt Jeneroux also abstained.
Davies clarified their decision to abstain, emphasizing that the budget did not adequately address the pressing needs of Canadians. Despite their stance against the budget, Davies highlighted the importance of avoiding an election amidst the current challenges faced by the country.
Regarding the inclusion of funding for a new Filipino cultural and community center in his riding, Davies explained the complexity of evaluating the budget as a whole. While recognizing some positive elements, such as the east-west energy grid and local projects supported by the NDP, Davies criticized the budget for its cuts to services, jobs, affordability assistance, healthcare, and climate initiatives.
Moving forward, Davies emphasized the need to hold the government accountable and collaborate across party lines to address the issues affecting Canadians. Despite the budget passing by a narrow margin, Davies stressed the importance of ongoing scrutiny and constructive engagement with the government to ensure policies that benefit all Canadians.
