New York Jets cornerback and key special teams player, Kris Boyd, sustained critical injuries in a shooting incident in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning, as reported by various news sources. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. outside a business on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue, according to the New York Police Department. A 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
While the police did not officially disclose the victim’s identity, multiple news outlets identified the injured man as Kris Boyd. The Jets spokesperson issued a brief statement saying, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will not provide further comments at this time.” However, Boyd’s agent did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the incident.
Boyd, who had been on the injured reserve list since August 18 due to a shoulder injury that necessitated surgery, has not played this season. He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to be a significant contributor to the team’s revamped special teams unit under new head coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, Boyd sustained his injury during a training camp practice on August 2, prompting his absence from the season.
Known for his exceptional performance in special teams during his NFL career, Boyd previously played for the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings. His teammates took to social media on Sunday, requesting prayers for Boyd’s swift recovery and well-being. Linebacker Jermaine Johnson urged everyone to send prayers to Boyd and his family, while defensive tackle Harrison Phillips called for strength for Boyd’s family and expressed optimism about his resilience.
