Glenn Hall, a legendary figure in the world of hockey, has passed away at the age of 94. Known for his remarkable streak of 502 consecutive starts as a goaltender, which still stands as an NHL record, Hall’s death was confirmed by a spokesperson for Chicago’s NHL team. He passed away at a hospital in Stony Plain, Alta., where he had been a resident for many years.

Hall, a pioneer of the butterfly style of goaltending, led Chicago to a Stanley Cup victory in 1961 and was named the most valuable player of the playoffs in 1968 with St. Louis. His remarkable record of over 500 games played in net, including the postseason, remains one of the most enduring records in sports history.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman praised Hall as a “sturdy, dependable, and spectacular talent in net,” highlighting his incredible achievement of starting 552 games in a row without wearing a mask. Nicknamed “Mr. Goalie,” Hall’s illustrious career included winning the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 1956 with the Detroit Red Wings and earning multiple Vezina Trophy honors as the league’s top goalie.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975, Hall was a seven-time first-team NHL All-Star, amassing 407 wins and 84 shutouts in 906 regular-season games. His jersey number, 1, was retired by Chicago in 1988, and he was selected as one of the top 100 players in the NHL’s first 100 years.

Beyond his playing days, Hall served as a goaltending consultant and left a lasting impact on the sport. His legacy is commemorated in various ways, including Glenn Hall Park and Glen Hall Drive in his hometown of Humboldt, Sask. A revered figure in the hockey world, Hall’s influence extended far beyond the crease, shaping the careers of future Hall of Fame goaltenders.

Chicago’s team honored Hall with a moment of silence before a recent game, paying tribute to his immense contributions to the sport. Fellow goaltender Martin Brodeur, a legend in his own right, hailed Hall as a standard-setter for future generations of goaltenders.

Hall’s remarkable career and legacy continue to inspire and resonate with hockey fans worldwide.
