The NHL has taken action against Mitch Love by suspending him for the rest of the season following an inquiry into allegations that emerged during his application for various head coaching positions across the league.

Concurrently, the Washington Capitals terminated Love’s employment. He had been an assistant coach under Spencer Carbery for the last two years and had been on leave since the previous month during the investigation period, with no specific information disclosed regarding the investigation’s nature.

In a statement, the Capitals emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards of behavior and responsibility, announcing Love’s immediate dismissal from his role. Love had been absent from the team since the development camp in July.

The NHL cited Love’s suspension as due to actions deemed harmful to the league, pending a comprehensive investigation. Love may seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season, contingent upon meeting specific requirements.

Love, aged 41 as of June, was considered a strong contender for coaching positions in Pittsburgh and Seattle, among others. He previously served as the head coach for the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate from 2021 to 2023 before joining the Washington Capitals.
