The Council of Leaders from the Northwest Territories is currently in Ottawa advocating for increased support from the Canadian government to tap into the region’s vast potential. Premier R.J. Simpson emphasized the need to move beyond discussions and take concrete steps towards development.

The delegation, including Deputy Premier Caroline Wawzonek and Indigenous government leaders, held a press conference to highlight key priorities, such as advancing major projects in the N.W.T. Three key projects in focus are the Mackenzie Valley Highway, Taltson Hydro expansion, and the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor linking Yellowknife to Grays Bay, Nunavut.

Wawzonek, who oversees strategic infrastructure, stressed the importance of securing financing from sources beyond the territory’s borders due to its limited capacity for complex financial arrangements. The Arctic corridor project, labeled as a “nation-building” initiative by Ottawa, is currently on the secondary priority list pending financing discussions.

The unique co-management process with Indigenous governments in the N.W.T. adds complexity to project development timelines. Wawzonek underlined the readiness of local partners to commence construction once financing details are finalized.

Collaboration with Indigenous groups like the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and Tłı̨chǫ government is crucial for advancing projects while ensuring environmental considerations are met. Chief Ernest Betsina emphasized the need to protect wildlife, particularly caribou, in project planning.

Beyond infrastructure projects, the leaders are focused on addressing outstanding land claims, supporting mining amid diamond mine closures, and mitigating the impact of reduced Jordan’s Principle funding. Danny Gaudet of the Délı̨nę Got’ınę Government highlighted the importance of responsible resource development to retain economic benefits within the North.

The Council’s visit to Ottawa aims to demonstrate the potential for collaborative efforts in driving economic growth and reinforcing Canada’s economy through Northern development. The leaders are optimistic about the North’s role in contributing to and shaping the national economy.
