The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, revealed on Wednesday that the Ontario government is allocating $50 million to facilitate the planning of a new Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH). Additionally, an amount of $1.9 million will be provided to support the redevelopment and expansion of the Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care long-term care home, which will be situated within the new hospital premises.

During a press conference in Kenora, Premier Ford emphasized that the new hospital aims to enhance access to high-quality healthcare for patients and families in northwestern Ontario, ensuring proximity to essential services. The facility is expected to feature three operating rooms, a procedure room, and a pre-admission clinic. Furthermore, it will house advanced diagnostic imaging services, including accommodations for the LWDH’s new MRI machine.

The Premier highlighted that the funding announcement will benefit over 30,000 patients annually from Kenora and its surrounding vicinity by offering state-of-the-art healthcare services for current and future generations. The initial $50 million commitment for the envisioned All Nations hospital project was initially disclosed by the province in May, a collaborative effort between LWDH and the Kenora Chiefs Advisory.

Cheryl O’Flaherty, President and CEO of LWDH, expressed enthusiasm for the investment, emphasizing its role in modernizing healthcare infrastructure and addressing health disparities in northwestern Ontario. Chief Waylon Scott of Wabaseemoong Independent Nations echoed this sentiment, underscoring the positive impact the projects will have on communities within the Treaty 3 Region and potentially extending to the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) lauded the funding announcement as a transformative initiative for healthcare in the region, emphasizing the importance of accessible, top-tier healthcare for residents in Kenora and adjacent communities. The upcoming expansion of the Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care home in Kenora, featuring 160 modernized beds tailored to the Indigenous community’s needs, is poised to start construction next year, supported by the government’s Capital Funding Program.
