Oscars Introduce New Category: Best Casting Award

Share

Beyond the typical glamour and emotional speeches at the Oscars, the 98th Academy Awards happening this Sunday will introduce a new category: the best casting award. This marks the first addition to the award show’s categories in 25 years, with the last new category being best animated feature film in 2001.

The award acknowledges the film’s casting director for their role in assembling the cast that brings a story to life. This year’s nominees for the award include Nina Gold for “Hamnet,” Jennifer Venditti for “Marty Supreme,” Cassandra Kulukundis for “One Battle After Another,” Gabriel Domingues for “The Secret Agent,” and Francine Maisler for “Sinners.”

While casting directors have always played a crucial role in fitting actors into a director’s vision, they have not always been recognized for their contributions. Erica A. Hart, a member of the Casting Society’s board of directors, expressed gratitude for the long-overdue recognition, emphasizing the significance of this moment for the profession.

The recognition of casting directors in film credits began in 1968, with casting director Lynn Stalmaster receiving acknowledgment for his work on “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Deirdre Bowen, a Canadian casting director, noted that it took time for casting directors to gain consistent credit in the industry, with the push for recognition intensifying around the 1990s.

The Oscars rulebook for 2026 defines the casting category and outlines the voting process, but the interpretation of the award by voting members remains open. The academy’s casting branch selected a shortlist of 10 films with exceptional casting, which underwent further evaluation before the final nominees were announced.

As the anticipation builds for the inaugural best casting award, the industry awaits the outcome of the Oscars ceremony, with “Sinners” being a strong contender. The decision-making process involves evaluating the ensemble dynamics and the overall impact of the cast on the film’s narrative.

In the end, the recognition of casting directors at prestigious award shows like the Oscars signifies a long-overdue acknowledgment of their craft and contribution to the storytelling process in the film industry.
