“Ottawa Commuters Face Hours Lost in Worsening Traffic”

Miral Vyas and Nick Groulx are experiencing worsening traffic conditions during their commutes in Ottawa. Vyas noted that his daily commute between downtown and Stittsville on Highway 417 takes about an hour each way, resulting in six hours of lost productivity per week. Groulx shared a similar sentiment, mentioning that his recent trip to Orléans took an hour and a half, leading to feelings of frustration and long days.

Coun. Tim Tierney, chair of Ottawa’s public works and infrastructure committee, acknowledged the pervasive issues of heavy traffic and extended delays in the city. He attributed the escalating traffic situation to various factors, including ongoing provincial highway construction projects, increased travel frequency due to modified work schedules, and a growing population that now travels throughout the week, not just during rush hours.

The provincial Ministry of Transportation has been finalizing the replacement of five overpasses on Highway 417, causing lane and ramp closures impacting areas like Bronson Avenue and Carling Avenue. This construction is expected to be completed by the year’s end. Additionally, the city’s Line 1 light rail extensions construction work, with lane closures on Highway 174 and intermittent closures of the Kichi Zìbì Mìkan, is contributing to the traffic congestion.

As the city anticipates the opening of the Line 1 east extension to Trim Road this year, it highlighted the seasonal traffic surge in autumn compared to summer. The city’s traffic operations center is actively adjusting traffic signals in real-time to manage the increased demand. Despite these efforts, Tierney emphasized the need for a more substantial solution, proposing a ring road south of the city to divert traffic from Highway 417, considering the continuous population growth in Ottawa.

With the city’s population projected to reach 1.4 million by 2045, Tierney expressed skepticism about traffic conditions improving even after the current construction projects are completed. He emphasized the necessity for a transformative approach to address the traffic challenges effectively. However, city council did not prioritize funding for a ring road initiative during the recent summer session.
