Residents of Naramata, B.C., are abuzz over the potential return of peacocks to their community following the recent sighting of two young peacocks. These colorful birds had long been a beloved fixture in the Okanagan community until the disappearance of the last two peacocks in 2022, believed to be victims of bobcats.

The appearance of what seems to be one of the young male peacocks near Naramata’s downtown area has sparked excitement and speculation among locals, reigniting discussions about the birds’ significance in the community and the mystery surrounding their reappearance.

Longtime resident and musician Yanti Sharples expressed the community’s enthusiasm upon hearing about the new peacock sightings, mentioning that the birds were seen roaming and exploring the area. Another resident, Jordie Graham, shared a photo of one peacock perched on a utility line, with reports of a second bird spotted as well.

The prospect of the peacocks returning has generated positive reactions from many residents who fondly recall the presence of these birds in Naramata for over two decades. Sharples mentioned that the peafowl, known for their vibrant fan tails, used to roam freely in the village until around 2010 when a peahen and her chicks were removed, leaving behind three adult male peacocks.

While some residents enjoyed the peacocks’ presence, others viewed them as a nuisance due to their habit of perching on cars and following the garbage truck on its weekly route. The disappearance of the last two peacocks in early 2022 was a sad event for the community, particularly during the pandemic.

Sharples, who commemorated the peacocks’ memory through art during their absence, expressed hope that the newly sighted birds would decide to stay in Naramata. The community is also curious about how the peacocks returned and who might be responsible for their reappearance.

The nostalgia and intrigue surrounding the potential return of the peacocks have sparked conversations and artistic expressions among residents, reflecting the unique connection between these exotic birds and the Naramata community.
