“Petition Urges Canada to Award Victoria Cross to Modern-Day Heroes”

The Victoria Cross, which is the highest military honor in Canada, has not been bestowed upon a Canadian soldier since the Second World War. A petition presented to the House of Commons aiming to address this issue has garnered over 16,000 signatures.

Pauline Rochefort, a Liberal MP representing Nipissing-Timiskaming, is championing the petition as a response to the exceptional actions of Pte. Jess Larochelle, an Afghanistan veteran from her constituency. Larochelle demonstrated remarkable bravery on October 14, 2006, in Pashmul, Afghanistan, where he valiantly defended his unit against a Taliban assault despite sustaining severe injuries.

Although Larochelle was posthumously awarded the Star of Military Valour, Canada’s second-highest distinction for courage in combat, he never received the Victoria Cross. Advocacy groups like Valour in the Presence of the Enemy, led by retired Royal Canadian Air Force captain Mike Harrison, have been advocating for a change in the awarding of the Victoria Cross in Canada since 2021.

Harrison highlighted that while other Allied nations have recognized their soldiers’ valor in Afghanistan, Canada has not awarded the Victoria Cross since 1945. He emphasized the disparity in recognition compared to other countries and the sacrifices made by Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

The petition urges the government to establish an independent committee to review cases of Afghanistan veterans who may meet the criteria for the Victoria Cross. Rochefort confirmed that the petition has met the required threshold for a government response within 45 days.

Noteworthy historical figures like Francis Pegahmagabow, an Indigenous First World War veteran, have also been overlooked for the Victoria Cross, raising concerns of systemic biases. The call for reform in the awarding process of the Victoria Cross has gained bipartisan support within the Canadian political landscape.

The initiative to reevaluate the Victoria Cross criteria for deserving veterans is gaining momentum, with multiple attempts made by various political parties to address the issue. It is a crucial step towards recognizing the extraordinary bravery and sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers in service to their country.
