Britney Spears, aged 44, faced charges in California for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, as confirmed by authorities. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office disclosed that the pop star was charged with a single misdemeanour offense of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug. The charges did not specify the specific type or quantity of alcohol or drugs involved in the incident.
Following her arrest on March 4 after driving erratically on U.S. 101, Spears, who has now enrolled in substance abuse treatment, was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol near her residence. After displaying signs of impairment and failing field sobriety tests, she was apprehended on suspicion of driving under the influence of a mix of alcohol and drugs and was subsequently booked at a Ventura County jail. Released on bail the next day, the police concluded their investigation and presented the case to prosecutors on March 23.
An official spokesperson at the time condemned Spears’ actions as “completely inexcusable” and emphasized the necessity for significant changes in her life. Subsequently, Spears voluntarily checked into a substance abuse treatment facility approximately a month post-arrest. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday, although her presence in court is not mandated due to the misdemeanor charge.
Britney Spears, renowned for hits like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” rose to fame as a prominent pop star during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Amidst personal struggles and intense media attention, including battles with mental health issues, Spears was subjected to a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008, which was managed predominantly by her father and legal advisors until its dissolution in 2021. Over the years, Spears has experienced marriage, divorce, and literary success with her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” while maintaining a low profile in the music industry since her last full album release in 2016.
