Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) successfully resolved a power outage in downtown Iqaluit by fixing a damaged pole, as announced in a recent update on their Facebook page around 1 p.m. on Saturday. The power shutdown was a precautionary measure taken by QEC earlier on Saturday to address a broken power pole near Arctic College.
During the repair work, QEC advised people to steer clear of the affected area if possible for safety reasons. The corporation anticipated that power would be fully restored by 1 p.m. as crews diligently worked on the downtown power lines. The outage impacted regions near NorthMart, Inuksuk High School, Arctic Ventures, the museum, and Four Corners, as illustrated on a map shared by QEC on their Facebook page.
NorthMart also communicated via Facebook that they would delay their store opening until power was reinstated, although Arctic Ventures remained unaffected by the outage. Additionally, the City of Iqaluit announced on social media that the Aquatic Centre would remain closed until power was fully operational again.
The circumstances surrounding the broken power pole have not been confirmed by QEC yet. CBC News has reached out to QEC and the Iqaluit RCMP for further details on the incident.
