“Quebec Liberal Party Leadership Race Amidst Scandal”

Share

The Quebec Liberal Party leadership race is set to commence on January 12, 2026, following Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. A new leader will be selected on March 14, 2026. Currently, Marc Tanguay, the MNA for LaFontaine, is serving as the interim leader of the Official Opposition at the National Assembly, taking over after Rodriguez resigned last week amidst internal party turmoil.

Concerns arose about illegal campaign contributions made to secure Rodriguez’s victory in the leadership election. Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, have initiated an investigation into these allegations of a pay-for-vote scheme. Rodriguez has denied any knowledge of such activities.

Prospective candidates for the leadership race must submit their applications by February 13 and gather 750 signatures from eligible party members. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to participate, with a spending limit capped at $120,000, excluding the deposit.
