Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to stay with the team for the upcoming season instead of testing free agency. The 30-year-old has opted to exercise his $16 million player option for the 2026 season, as confirmed by the organization on Wednesday.

Bieber, who joined the Blue Jays from the Cleveland Guardians during the trade deadline last summer, recorded a 4-2 record and a 3.57 earned-run average in his time with Toronto. His choice to remain with the team adds stability to the starting rotation, which is expected to feature Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and potentially Eric Lauer, while the future of Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt remains uncertain as they are both free agents.

During the postseason, Bieber achieved a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA. Notably, he secured a crucial road victory in Game 4 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers but also faced challenges, including surrendering a decisive home run to Will Smith in the 11th inning of a game that ended in a 5-4 loss for the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Since his debut in 2018, Bieber has amassed a 66-34 record and a 3.24 ERA. His standout performance in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season earned him the American League Cy Young Award after an impressive 8-1 record and a 1.63 ERA with the Guardians.

Bieber made a strong return to the field with Toronto on August 22, pitching six innings and allowing only two hits in his first major-league start following Tommy John surgery in April 2024. His decision to remain with the Blue Jays for the 2026 season came as a bit of a surprise, considering the potential for lucrative offers in the open market. By staying with Toronto, he aims to enhance his value further on a team that is poised for another competitive season.

The Blue Jays had a successful 2025 season, winning 94 games and clinching the AL East Division title. They advanced through the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees and the AL Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners before ultimately losing to the Dodgers.

The team is gearing up for the upcoming season, with spring training set to commence in mid-February. The Blue Jays will kick off their 2026 campaign on March 26 with a home game against the Athletics.
