A shelter-in-place advisory that was put in place for Ginoogaming First Nation on Wednesday has now been lifted by the Ontario Provincial Police. The police had issued the advisory in response to reports of gunfire in the community early in the morning. Following the incident, authorities conducted a search for two individuals who were believed to be armed and dangerous and were on the run in the vicinity.
An update provided by the police on Thursday afternoon confirmed that one person had been found dead and another person was injured. Later on Thursday evening, the OPP announced that two men had been apprehended after a two-day search for suspects connected to a homicide investigation and deemed as armed and dangerous.
Although no further details have been disclosed, the police assured the public that the situation in the community has now been stabilized, and the threat to public safety is no longer active. However, the investigation is still ongoing, and residents in the area are advised to remain alert and report any suspicious activities.
As a result of the search operation, several schools and businesses in the region were forced to close temporarily. Nishnawbe Aski Nation officials convened a press conference in Thunder Bay on Thursday afternoon to discuss pressing matters concerning policing, justice, and community safety, against the backdrop of the unfolding events in Ginoogaming First Nation.
