Filmmaker Drew Hyttenrauch seized a unique opportunity to produce a significant project shedding light on the growing needs of the Down syndrome community, a cause close to his heart as he shares the journey with his sister. Hyttenrauch, who serves as his sister’s primary caregiver, embarked on a production venture in Windsor, Ont., alongside Natalie, to create a commercial for a Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) campaign during Down Syndrome Week.

The commercial highlights the challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome as they age, emphasizing the disparity in healthcare systems for this demographic. To address this issue, the CDSS is fundraising for a specialized course to provide tailored training for Down syndrome care and bridge the existing health equity gap.

Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition associated with chromosome 21, affects over 22,000 individuals in Canada. Health concerns specific to Down syndrome include congenital heart conditions, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid problems, and respiratory infections. Drew and Natalie Hyttenrauch, both in their 30s, are personally invested in addressing these health and aging issues.

Drew, who operates a production company in Windsor, expressed his deep connection to the cause, citing the project as the most significant and fulfilling endeavor of his career. The commercial features individuals with Down syndrome in everyday scenarios, aiming to showcase their active participation in society and challenge stereotypes.

The production brought together actors from various parts of Ontario, with a local crew ensuring a high-quality outcome comparable to productions in larger cities. Through the commercial, the Hyttenrauch siblings and their team strive to convey a message of inclusion, resilience, and empowerment for individuals with Down syndrome.

Natalie Hyttenrauch, an integral part of the project and the inspiration behind it, expressed her pride in contributing to the campaign. Alongside personal support worker Natalie Hall, who commended the initiative, the Hyttenrauch siblings are dedicated to advocating for improved care and support for individuals with Down syndrome.
