Summer McIntosh’s pursuit of five individual gold medals at the 2028 Summer Olympics is facing unexpected challenges due to a recent change in scheduling for the upcoming Summer Games. The alteration has led to scheduling conflicts that will impact the Canadian swimming sensation’s event selection.
One significant change involves the women’s 200-meter butterfly and 800-meter freestyle events being scheduled back-to-back on the final day of swimming competition. This scheduling adjustment effectively rules out McIntosh’s participation in the 800m freestyle event, despite her strong performance and potential for success in Los Angeles.
Although McIntosh, a 19-year-old from Toronto and a three-time world champion, remains focused on vying for multiple gold medals, her fifth event at the Games is now likely to be the 200m freestyle. This decision was confirmed by Byron MacDonald, the head swimming coach at the University of Toronto, who emphasized that the revised schedule has shifted the discussion towards McIntosh’s participation in the 200 freestyle event.
McIntosh is expected to compete in the 200m individual medley, 400m IM, 200m fly, and 400m free events at the Olympics. The conflicting schedules have ruled out the possibility of her participating in the 800m freestyle and 200 backstroke events due to overlapping gold medal attempts.
As McIntosh prepares for her Olympic campaign, she is set to begin with the 400m freestyle final on Saturday, July 22. The tentative projection of McIntosh’s event lineup for the 2028 Olympics includes a series of events leading up to her participation in the 200m butterfly final on the ninth day of competition.
In a separate update related to the Summer Games, organizers announced a significant shift in the opening day events, with track and field leading off the Olympics instead of swimming. The change means that the women’s 100 meters sprint will take center stage on the first day, providing a challenging start for the fastest female athletes in the world.
This decision was made due to logistical reasons, as the opening ceremony and the swim meet are both scheduled to take place at SoFi Stadium. Setting up the swimming pool in the stadium immediately after the ceremony was deemed impractical, prompting the swap in the event order.
The revised schedule offers a unique and demanding start to the 2028 Summer Games for athletes and fans alike, setting the stage for thrilling competitions and memorable performances.
