Grijalva, aged 54 and a mother of three, decided to transition into federal politics by running for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, which became vacant following the passing of her father, Raul, earlier this year.
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s delay in administering the oath to Grijalva has raised concerns among Democrats, who believe that her potential involvement in bipartisan efforts for increased transparency regarding investigations into Jeffrey Epstein’s case, the deceased child sex offender associated with Donald Trump, could be a determining factor.
The ongoing partial government shutdown since October 1 has stalled legislative proceedings, with Speaker Johnson yet to allocate floor votes. Some Democrats have accused Johnson of backtracking on his earlier commitments to swearing in Grijalva promptly, attributing the delay to political motives rather than procedural issues.
In response to mounting pressure, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded Johnson to swear in Grijalva promptly, criticizing the delay as a partisan strategy that undermines the integrity of the House. Johnson’s explanation for the delay has been met with skepticism, with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes threatening legal action due to the absence of representation for over 800,000 Arizonans.
The situation has further escalated as Republicans and Democrats clash over the handling of Grijalva’s induction, with implications tied to the release of federal files on Epstein.
