The 2026 Juno Awards ceremony showcased a mix of accolades and musical performances on Sunday evening. Hosted by comedian Mae Martin, the event emphasized Canadian identity while maintaining a sense of familiarity typical of previous Juno Awards.
While most of the awards were presented at a smaller gala the day before, the televised portion of the ceremony featured the recognition of four main categories, including group, contemporary R&B recording, breakthrough artist or group, and fan choice. Notably, Alberta’s Tate McRae dominated the night, securing wins in multiple categories such as artist, single (“Sports Car”), pop album, and album (“So Close to What”).
The fan choice award, decided by audience votes, went to Vancouver rapper bbno$, who made headlines recently for announcing a temporary departure from music due to online criticism. Despite potential controversies surrounding the winners, the event stayed clear of addressing any contentious issues, focusing instead on celebrating Canadian talent and culture.
Throughout the night, various artists delivered captivating performances, including rising talents like Mico and Sofia Camara, as well as established names like Daniel Caesar and The Beaches. Notable moments included Drake’s virtual tribute to Nelly Furtado and Joni Mitchell’s acceptance of a lifetime achievement award, presented by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Although big names like The Weeknd and Justin Bieber were absent from the event, the Juno Awards continued to honor and showcase exceptional musicians, reflecting the vibrancy and diversity of the Canadian music scene.
