In the midst of a dating landscape dominated by apps and virtual interactions, a London theatre company is taking a nostalgic approach to love and relationships, while also offering emerging theatre talents a chance to hone their skills on stage.

Theatre Aezir has recently kicked off a series of performances in London featuring “Dating Games,” a selection of five short plays that delve into the challenges and joys of connecting with someone in person and experiencing romance face-to-face.

Aidan Robertson, one of the directors, highlighted the significance of showcasing love in its organic, traditional forms amidst the prevalence of online dating culture. One of the plays depicts two individuals navigating an awkward encounter after unexpectedly meeting at a dog park.

Elizabeth Durand, the artistic director of Theatre Aezir, initially had reservations about the relevance of the play’s themes, considering the significant shifts in modern dating since they were penned by American writer and playwright Garth Wingfield in 1995. However, after reviewing the scripts, younger cast members affirmed that the essence of love portrayed in the stories remains timeless, regardless of how or where connections are made.

In a challenging role, Robertson not only directs but also portrays 23 different romantic interests in the play “Mary Just Broke Up With This Guy,” showcasing his versatility and commitment to the craft. As part of nurturing new talent, aspiring directors like Robertson were paired with mentors to provide valuable guidance and support, reflecting the theatre company’s commitment to fostering young artists.

Durand emphasized the importance of cultivating talent and sustaining the vibrancy of the art form, stating that their mission is to provoke thought through theatre, necessitating a continuous influx of fresh, young talents.

“Dating Games” will be running until Nov. 16 at First Baptist Church in central London, with tickets available on Theatre Aezir’s website. The production aims to explore love in its traditional essence amidst the modern dating landscape.
