Theatre Companies Donate Fur for Animal Rehab

Share

Two theatre companies in southwestern Ontario have decided to address the concerns raised by an animal rights organization by donating old fur garments from their wardrobe collections for animal rehabilitation purposes. The Palace Theatre in London recently announced intentions to hold a flash fur sale, initially planning to recycle old garments no longer needed for their stage productions.

The decision to sell vintage fur raised objections from Jenny McQueen, a co-founder of Animal Rights Toronto, who opposes the sale, resale, and reuse of fur. Despite the ongoing debate over the use of fur in Canada, with some seeing a resurgence in vintage fur and its significance for Indigenous communities, McQueen advocates for permanently ending its use.

In a bid to discourage the normalization and popularity of fur use, McQueen’s #ZipOffTheCruelty campaign encourages people to donate old fur garments to her organization. These donated fur items, including coats, hats, and trim pieces, are then passed on to animal rehabilitation centers for use as bedding.

McQueen successfully convinced The Palace Theatre to donate their fur garments instead of selling them by sharing an Instagram video showing a fur hat donated by her group being used as bedding for orphaned baby squirrels. The heartwarming image of baby squirrels snuggling into the fur hat highlighted the comfort it provides to the animals.

Similarly, the Stratford Festival theatre donated multiple fur coats from its collection to Animal Rights Toronto, citing inadequate storage for preservation and actors’ preferences against wearing real fur as reasons for the donation. However, not all animal rehabilitation centers view fur as ideal bedding material, with concerns over potential chemical treatments in vintage fur and the challenges of cleaning soiled fur.

In conclusion, the decision by these theatre companies to donate old fur garments for animal rehabilitation reflects a growing awareness of animal welfare concerns and a shift away from the use of fur in various industries.
