“TikTok Blocks ‘SkinnyTok’ Hashtag Over Concerns”

Share

TikTok has taken action to block search results related to the hashtag “SkinnyTok” due to a surge in content promoting unhealthy weight loss practices and disordered eating behaviors on the platform. The decision to block the hashtag was made after observing a rise in harmful content associated with it, according to a statement from TikTok provided to CBC News.

The term “SkinnyTok” is commonly used to refer to a subculture of influencers and content creators who advocate for extreme thinness. Content creators under the #SkinnyTok umbrella often produce videos with catchy phrases like “Skinny is the outfit,” encouraging viewers to pursue extreme weight loss methods.

Following the block on SkinnyTok searches, users will now receive a message directing them to expert resources when attempting to access such content. In Canada, users will be directed to contact information and links for organizations like the National Eating Disorder Information Centre and Anorexie et boulimie Québec.

This move by TikTok comes after an increase in content promoting disordered eating and unhealthy weight loss behaviors earlier this year, as stated by a spokesperson. In April, France’s Minister of State for Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz raised concerns about the hashtag to the country’s digital watchdog and the European Commission. Together with French nurse Charlyne Buigues, Chappaz campaigned for the removal of the hashtag since April, with a petition initiated by Buigues amassing nearly 35,000 signatures.

On June 1, Chappaz announced in French on X that TikTok had confirmed the removal of the hashtag from its platform, calling it a collective victory.
