Donald Oliver, a retired senator, lawyer, and co-founder of the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, passed away at the age of 86. The CEO of the Black Cultural Centre, Russell Grosse, shared the news of Oliver’s demise on Wednesday via a Facebook post, revealing that he succumbed to cardiac amyloidosis after a prolonged battle.
Describing Oliver as a trailblazer, Grosse highlighted his pivotal role in establishing the centre back in 1983 in Cherry Brook. The day of Oliver’s passing coincided with the 42nd anniversary of the Black Cultural Centre, adding a bittersweet element to the occasion.
Originating from Wolfville, N.S. in 1938, Oliver etched his name in history in 1990 by becoming the first Black man appointed to Canada’s Senate. His remarkable 23-year tenure ended with his retirement in 2013. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston lauded Oliver’s contributions, emphasizing his grace, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to inclusivity and justice.
Oliver’s Senate appointment in 1990 marked a significant milestone, fostering a sense of visibility and belonging for Black Canadians. Grosse underscored the importance of this historic event in reshaping perceptions and driving societal change, albeit citing the need for a swifter pace of progress.
In 2015, Oliver received a dire prognosis of six months to live due to cardiac amyloidosis, yet defied the odds through experimental treatment. His resilience led to prestigious honors, including appointments to the Order of Canada in 2019 and the Order of Nova Scotia in 2020. His memoir, “A Matter of Equality: The Life’s Work of Senator Don Oliver,” was published in 2021, encapsulating his journey and dedication.
Despite his numerous accolades, Grosse emphasized Oliver’s humility and envisioned his legacy as a catalyst for transformative change. A memorial service is set to take place on Saturday, September 27, at New Horizons Baptist Church in Halifax, offering a final tribute to a remarkable figure.
