The recent approval by regional councillors paves the way for the expansion of the LRT system to Cambridge, connecting residents across the tri-cities with a single ride. The proposed 17-kilometre extension from Fairway Station in Kitchener to Galt received positive feedback from public and stakeholders, leading to the recommendation to add stations at Sportsworld, Preston, Pinebush, Cambridge Centre Mall, Can-Amera Parkway, Delta Centre, and Galt in Cambridge.
The extension plan also presented three shorter LRT routes as alternatives: Fairway to Pinebush, Fairway to Delta Centre, and Preston to downtown Cambridge. Additionally, a consideration for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service with dedicated lanes from Fairway Station to downtown Cambridge was explored.
While the majority of regional councillors supported the expansion, Cambridge Mayor Jann Liggett expressed concerns about connectivity and costs associated with the full-length LRT option. Despite her reservations, the expansion received significant backing from delegates during the council meeting, with stakeholders highlighting the benefits, including improved access to healthcare and economic growth opportunities.
However, not all Cambridge councillors are in favor of the LRT expansion. Some residents, like Cambridge Ward 1 Coun. Helen Shwery, oppose the project due to concerns about costs and limited benefits for the majority of residents. She called for a referendum to gauge public opinion before moving forward with the extension.
Cambridge Coun. Adam Cooper echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for flexible transportation solutions that cater to the city’s growth. Concerns were also raised about the financial burden on taxpayers and the impact on road congestion during construction.
The LRT extension to Cambridge has been in the works for several years, with key milestones achieved in route approval, station locations, and environmental assessments. Regional staff are now focused on securing funding from provincial and federal sources to support the estimated $3.1 billion project cost for the full-length route, which includes construction, vehicle procurement, property acquisition, and operational expenses. The escalated 2033 costs are projected to reach $4.3 billion, with an annual operation and maintenance budget of $23.8 million.
