“Trump Approves CIA Ops in Venezuela to Oust Maduro”

U.S. President Donald Trump has given the green light for the CIA to carry out undercover operations in Venezuela, signaling a significant escalation in U.S. efforts to exert pressure on President Nicolas Maduro’s regime. The decision, initially reported by The New York Times based on insights from U.S. officials, underscores the Trump administration’s strategy to oust Maduro from power. In a bid to tackle the influx of drugs into the United States from Venezuela, particularly through maritime routes, Trump justified his authorization of these operations.

The administration has pledged a reward of $50 million for information that leads to Maduro’s arrest and conviction on drug trafficking charges. Trump’s recent military reinforcement in the southern Caribbean has been accompanied by at least five strikes on vessels suspected of involvement in drug trafficking since early September. These strikes, resulting in the deaths of at least 27 individuals, have sparked controversy, with one video posted by Trump depicting an explosive attack on a vessel.

Venezuela’s foreign ministry swiftly condemned Trump’s remarks, denouncing them as a severe breach of international law and the United Nations’ Charter. Maduro has firmly rejected any notions of ‘regime change,’ likening such intentions to past U.S. military interventions in other countries. The Trump administration’s persistent accusations against Venezuela regarding drug trafficking have faced scrutiny, with records indicating Mexico as the primary source of fentanyl, not Venezuela.

In response to queries, Trump dismissed traditional Coast Guard interception methods as ineffective, opting for more aggressive tactics. The administration’s limited disclosure on the strikes, including the lack of details on casualties and cargo, has raised concerns among lawmakers. Senator Jeanne Shaheen expressed apprehension over the administration’s actions, suggesting a potential drift towards direct conflict, a sentiment echoed by Republican Senator Rand Paul who has criticized the strikes. Despite a recent Senate vote to block the strikes, insufficient Republican backing hindered the motion.

Trump’s utilization of military power in unconventional ways, including counterterrorism measures against drug traffickers, has been a recurring theme during his tenure. The Pentagon’s recent confirmation to Congress of the U.S.’ engagement in a non-international armed conflict with drug cartels further underscores the administration’s aggressive stance. While the situation continues to unfold, questions persist regarding the legality and implications of Trump’s approach towards Venezuela.
