Valerie Grenier, hailing from St-Isidore, Ont., faced a setback in the Mont-Tremblant alpine skiing World Cup’s second leg after her bronze-winning performance on Saturday. Austria’s Julia Scheib claimed victory in the giant slalom event on Sunday. Grenier veered off course towards the end of her first run, attributing the mishap to a common error she tends to make, causing her to almost lose control. Despite this, Grenier acknowledged the need to improve on this aspect of her skiing.

Grenier’s run showed promise until the mistake disrupted her momentum, with the 29-year-old, who honed her skills at Mont-Tremblant, trailing closely behind Alice Robinson of New Zealand and Scheib. Scheib secured her third giant slalom medal of the season with a winning time of 2:13.00, triumphing over her competitors.

Expressing mixed emotions about her performance, Grenier reflected on her run, noting both positive and challenging sections. She acknowledged the frustration of the missed opportunity but found encouragement in her overall skiing form. Scheib, pleased with her achievement, highlighted the satisfaction of a successful second run following a tough previous day.

Sara Hector from Sweden claimed the second spot with a time of 2:13.57, followed by Alice Robinson in third place at 2:13.78. In a thrilling finish, Scheib’s exceptional second run forced Robinson to push her limits. However, a late error cost Robinson crucial time, dropping her to third place.

Canadian skier Britt Richardson, from Canmore, Alta., finished 12th after a strong initial run, expressing a blend of disappointment and contentment with her performance. Scheib’s impressive showing in the event brought her closer to Robinson in the giant slalom standings, trailing by just 12 points after the completion of four races.

The day’s competition also saw Switzerland’s Camille Rast and American Mikaela Shiffrin secure the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Shiffrin maintains her lead in the overall standings with a significant point margin over her closest competitors, showcasing her dominance in the sport.
